PALO ALTO CITY-FUNDED ANIMAL SHELTER TO CONTINUE ITS WORK

"Rarely have I seen an organization come forward with a comprehensive set of ideas like that." –Palo Alto City Councilmember Sid Espinosa when referring to the Palo Alto Humane Society proposal

The budget proposal that came before the Palo Alto City Council on June 11, to be finalized on June 18, included allocations for the municipal animal shelter to continue its operations through fiscal year 2013. The turning point for the City Council to reject the City Manager's plan to outsource shelter operations came after Palo Alto Humane Society submitted a proposal suggesting specific measures to address the budget deficit caused by the City of Mountain View's decision not to renew its contract with Palo Alto Animal Services, which runs the shelter.

Also instrumental in persuading the City Council not to shut down the shelter was the huge public outcry against the proposed outsourcing organized by Palo Alto Humane Society and the Save Our Shelter campaign.
